Elektra (Widescreen Edition) List Price: $14.98 Sale Price: $3.61 Used From: $0.88 |
FROM THE FORCES THAT BROUGHT YOU X-MEN AND DAREDEVIL…Superstar Jennifer Garner proves that looks can kill as the sexiest action hero ever to burst from the pages of Marvel Comics. Restored to life after sustaining mortal wounds in Daredevil, an icy, solitary Elektra (Garner) now lives only for death as the world’s most lethal assassin. Using her bone-crunching martial arts skills and Kimagure—the ability to see into the future—Elektra is on a collision course with darkness… until her latest assignment forces her to make a choice that will lead either to her redemption or destruction in the ultimate battle between good and evil!Product Measures: 0.5 x 5.5 x 7.5 While 2003's Daredevil was a conventional superhero movie, the 2005 spinoff, Elektra, is more of a wuxia-styled martial arts/fantasy flick. Elektra (Jennifer Garner) has returned to her life as a hired assassin, but she balks at an assignment to kill a single father (Goran Visnjic, ER) and his teenage daughter (Kirsten Prout). That makes her the target of the Hand, an organization of murderous ninjas, scheming corporate types, and a band of stylish supervillains seeking to eliminate Elektra and tip the balance of power in the ongoing battle of good vs. evil. As the star of Alias, Garner has proven that she can kick butt with the best of them, and some of the visual effects are impressive, but the action sequences tend to be anticlimactic, and there's not much to the story. Fans will notice numerous references to Frank Miller's comic books, but there's very little resemblance to Miller's cold-blooded killer (Elektra with an agent? Elektra referring to herself as a "soccer mom"?). Is Elektra better than Daredevil? Not really, even with the distinct advantage of having all Garner and no Ben Affleck. That could be the spinoff's greatest disappointment: after Spider-Man 2 raised the bar for comic-book movies, Elektra lowered it back to Daredevil's level. Directed by Rob Bowman (the X-Files movie), and featuring Terence Stamp as the mysterious mentor Stick, Will Yun Lee (Die Another Day) as the chief villain, and NFL-player-turned-mixed-martial-arts-champion Bob Sapp as the immovable Stone. DVD features Ben Affleck's much-rumored cameo is one of the deleted scenes on the Elektra DVD. It's a one-minute throwaway, and while he's supposedly appearing as Matt Murdock (who romanced Elektra in Daredevil), the barrage of celebrity gossip makes it impossible to see him as anything other than Jennifer Garner's real-life boyfriend. There's also a making-of featurette, which is mostly promotional hype other than a few interesting effects shots; four editing featurettes; and Jennifer Garner's videotaped message to ComicCon. --David Horiuchi More on Elektra Elektra: The Album (Soundtrack CD) Elektra: The Movie (Comic Adaptation) Frank Miller Comic Books Daredevil (Director's Cut) (DVD) Jennifer Garner stars in Alias (DVD) More Superhero DVDs |

Dark Horse Deluxe Classic Marvel Characters: The Fantastic Four Statue #1: Mr. Fantastic List Price: $49.99 Sale Price: $44.95 |
5 1/2" tall, limited to 1,000 numbered pieces Appearing in 1961, the Fantastic Four was the first superhero team created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist and co-plotter Jack Kirby. It ushered in the "Marvel Age" of comics and was an immediate success. The first statuette in the Fantastic Four Classic Character series is none other than Reed Richards as Mr. Fantastic. The ongoing character lineup will present these characters as they originally appeared, but they are deliberately different than what is common with a modern Marvel collectible sculpture, with features like a rougher surface texture, visible seam lines, and other slightly "distressed" aspects, such as paint application. Sculpted by Yoe! Studio. |

Hot Rod List Price: $8.99 Sale Price: $8.99 Used From: $4.88 |
After making a name for himself on SNL through a series of shorts, particularly viral video favorite "Lazy Sunday," the way was clear for Andy Samberg to segue to the big screen. Directed by SNL scribe Akiva Schaffer, Hot Rod proves his humor works best in small doses. Then again, producer Will Ferrell got his start in A Night at the Roxbury. In his first starring role, Samberg is amateur stuntman Rod Kimble. To raise money for his ailing stepfather, Frank (played with devilish glee by Deadwood's Ian McShane), Rod plans to jump 15 school buses on a moped. With support from his crew, which includes SNL's Bill Hader and Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers), Rod trains for the big event. All the while, Denise (Fisher) is seeing obnoxious attorney Jonathan (Will Arnett, Arrested Development). Lack of physical dexterity aside, Rod prevails through pure dogged determination. You've seen it before, and if you can't get enough of this sort of thing, you'll see it again. Hot Rod is the kind of slapdash comedy that neglects to provide its hero with an age, a job, or even a hometown. But don't count Samberg out. Given time, he may yet craft a persona that doesn't borrow so heavily from the man-boy antics associated with Ferrell and Adam Sandler. Still, Hot Rod would've worked better with the funnier, more sympathetic Jorma Taccone, who plays Rod's half-brother, in the lead--on the other hand, that's the same formula that made Napoleon Dynamite a hit. --Kathleen C. Fennessy SELF-PROCLAIMED STUNTMAN ROD KIMBLE IS PREPARING FOR THE JUMP OF HIS LIFE. ROD PLANS TO CLEAR 15 BUSES IN AN ATTEMPT TO RAISE MONEY FOR HIS ABUSIVE STEP-FATHER FRANK'S LIFE-SAVING HEART OPERATION. HE'LL LAND THE JUMP, GET FRANK BETTER, AND THENFIGHT HIM, HARD. |

Tex Avery's Droopy - The Complete Theatrical Collection List Price: $26.98 Sale Price: $7.99 Used From: $13.95 |
TEX AVERY'S DROOPY:COMPLETE THEATRICA - DVD Movie Frederick "Tex" Avery directed some of the funniest cartoons ever made, but he relied primarily on situations and moving graphics, rather than on the personalities of familiar characters. Droopy, the phlegmatic basset hound, was one of the few characters Avery used regularly: His low-key presence was the perfect counter to the extreme takes, fast cuts, frenetic action, and general mayhem going on around him. Avery is also noted for "self-reflexive gags:" the characters know they're in a cartoon and often comment on the fact. In "Dumb-Hounded,"a sprinting wolf cuts a corner too sharply, skids past the sprocket holes at the edge of the film, and onto the blank screen. Droopy frequently turns to the camera and comments, "You now what? I'm happy." Some of the later films in the collection, made by animators Dick Lundy and Michael Lah, lack Avery's manic panache. The last cartoons in the collection were designed for the CinemaScope format: Droopy's pudgy form looks lost in those vast frames, and the flattened graphics pioneered by the UPA studio distort his rounded shape. But those are minor caveats. Fans have waited impatiently for Tex Avery's seminal cartoons to be released on DVD in the US, and this collection is a must-have for anyone interested in animation.(Unrated, suitable for ages 6 and older: cartoon violence, alcohol and tobacco use, risqué humor) --Charles Solomon |
