Some say John Carpenter's 1978 movie Halloween started the post-modern era of truly scary and horrifying genre of slasher horror movies as opposed to the early horror movies that are largely based on classic literature of the gothic/horror genre, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Phantom of the Opera and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Others say the modern era of creepy and terrifying characters really began with Rosemary's Baby(1968) or The Exorcist(1973). Who really knows since it's a matter of subjective opinion? One thought is that "the mark of a great horror film is whether it sustains its vision of terror through several generations of increasingly desensitized viewers. Does the movie still make you jump or squirm or sweat or scream?"[1]

However, that hasn't prevented Halloween Monsters from compiling our 2009 list of some of the most memorable AND scariest, creepiest villains, monsters and horror movie characters that come to mind around Halloween season:
